Salzburg Mozart Weekend
- with Peter Adcock -

15 May - 17 May 2009

Register Here

Following the success of our concerts in Paris and Leipzig, we have arranged a very special performance of the Mozart Requiem in Salzburg - birthplace and spiritual home of the musical prodigy. The concert – which will take place on the Saturday night - will be performed with full professional orchestra and soloists in the magnificent Baroque Kollegienkirche

The Kollegienkirche, situated in the heart of Salzburg’s historic Old Town, has impeccable Mozart credentials and was the setting for the first performance of his D Minor Mass (K.65) in 1769. The costs of staging the concert will be substantial so, to make it more affordable for our singers, we are working with a local agency to help us promote the event and sell tickets.

This is not a Bring & Sing event. Places are restricted and first priority will be given to singers who have sung with us before. Participants must be prepared to learn their part thoroughly beforehand as rehearsal time will be limited. If it has been a while since you sang the Requiem, you might want to consider buying one of the excellent ChoraLine rehearsal tapes/CDs available from Music Dynamics (01242 679379). These are available for individual parts. As before, there will be a sing through in London (18 April) and Exeter (19 April) to refresh our collective note memories

The fortress                                                                               Mozart family grave

When we are not rehearsing, there will be plenty of time to explore Mozart’s Birthplace and Museum, the Fortress and Old Market - and to sample the Sachertorte in the local cafes. Salzburg is a small, perfectly formed town which you can walk around in an afternoon. If you can add on an extra day or two - please try - it is well worth venturing out to explore the Salt Mines, Hitler’s Eagles Nest, or the remarkable Ice Caves. May is a great time to visit Salzburg - it is not yet overrun with Summer visitors but there is plenty to see and do.

Rehearsals will begin at 2.00 pm on the Friday afternoon but if there is sufficient interest, we will arrange to spend Friday morning on the original Sound of Music tour - endorsed by Maria von Trapp herself - which is huge fun and takes you deep into the heart of the beautiful Austrian Lake District as well as the more accessible and recognisable film locations in and around the town. You will need to book an extra night’s accommodation on the Thursday.

Music
You will need to provide your own score for the requiem and it must be the Barenreiter/ Sűssmayr edition. There are several differences of notation and underlay from the Novello that most of us have, and Peter will be using page numbers during rehearsals. It is also, importantly, the edition that the orchestra will be using. These scores can also be obtained from Music Dynamics

Peter Adcock
Peter has over 15 years of conducting experience and, in addition to his frequent collaborations with other musicians include Sir David Willcocks, Robert Tear, Sir Neville Marriner and Nigel Perrin, He currently directs the highly regarded Exeter-based chamber choir ExeVox and also regularly coaches and accompanies many international singers including Claire Powell, Isobel Buchanan, Yvonne Fontane and Sarah Walker.

Accommodation
Accomodation is expensive in Salzburg but we have secured a good deal from a hotel which is located within easy walking distance of the Old Town. It is also only about 15 minutes from the airport. The hotel offers a splendid breakfast, and even has a Piano Bar. Dinner on the Friday night and Saturday night will be in a traditional Salzburg restaurant near the Church.

Travel arrangements
This bit is up to you and is not included in the price of the weekend. Salzburg has it’s own small airport which will be many people’s first choice, but one can also fly to other Austrian airports or via Munich - which is only two hours away. Ryanair has direct flights to Salzburg from Stansted. At time of writing, these are looking very good value.

The Price
The cost of the weekend including the concert, two nights B&B at the hotel and two evening meals will be £355 per person sharing. (Single room supplement £65)

Travel and health insurance
Insurance is not included but is easy and cheap to arrange. You should also bring your EH 1C form with you (replaces E111).

Deposit and payment
We will require a £75.00 deposit per person. The balance is payable no later than four weeks before we leave.

Choir balance
The weekend is restricted to a maximum of fifty singers and there is a need to keep a balance of voices in the choir.

To apply for a place on the course, please print out and submit the registration form.
